It did not take long for construction activities at the site of Senoia’s new library to get under way. Trees are coming down at the new facility at Merrimac Lakes Park and the City Council on May 2 unanimously approved the $80,000 contract bid by Newnan-based Headley Construction for the library’s landscaping and the parking lot.

City Administrator Richard Ferry at the meeting said the project is part of and contiguous to the 1.04-acre area where the 6,563 square-foot library is to be constructed. The library is being constructed under a separate contract, Ferry said.

The vote by council members followed the April 23 groundbreaking at the library site at city-owned Merrimac Lakes Park on Pylant Street.

Headley was previously awarded the contract to construct the library building.

Funds for the $1.7 million project project had been in place for some time. Approximately $1.2 million in funding is coming from state sources that can only be used for construction and equipment. Another $500,000 came from a previous Coweta County Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax initiative. An additional $250,000 for the project will come from Senoia.
