Eight cadets of the Peachtree City Squadron of Civil Air Patrol attended the CAP Glider Academy at Rome, GA over the weekend of April 2-3. Receiving glider flights were cadets Daniel Schulz, Nathan Bernth, Cole Davis from Peachtree City; Cadets Michael Alexander and Jairus Swint of Fayetteville; cadets Reid Geddie and Parker McKeehan from Newnan; and Cadet Garrett Peters of Senoia. Glider pilot instructors from the Peachtree City Squadron passing on their love of flying to the next generation were Lt. Col. Peter Schulz of Peachtree City and Capt. George Wood of Fayetteville. In all, 34 glider flights were given to the cadets, mostly first time fliers.
Standing out during the weekend activity was Cadet MSgt Nathan Bernth (16) who earned the FAA Private Pilot Certificate, rated in gliders. CAP Lt. Col. Bob Davis gave Cadet Bernth his qualifying check ride. The young pilot began his soaring instruction in Arizona in 2009, and continued with pilot instructor Phillip Laberge at Meadowlark Field in Georgia, where Cadet Bernth had his first solo glider flight at the age of 14.
The CAP Glider Academy is one of many special activities held not only in the Georgia Wing of CAP, but throughout the nation. The CAP cadet program is open for young people ages 12 to 18. The award-winning Peachtree City Squadron has one of the largest cadet components in Georgia CAP.
