The “Soldier Care” ministry of All Saints Anglican Church in Peachtree City works closely with the United Services Organization (USO) at Hartsfield-Jackson airport to provide for U.S. military personnel traveling to battlefields overseas. The general public is being asked to help in this important effort.

Ministry head Fred Smith said each day, hundreds of soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, and coastguard members pass through the airport enroute to Iraq, Afghanistan, and many places all over the world in order to support U.S. commitments overseas. Each month, Smith’s ministry team delivers a variety of items to the USO that are small comforts for the troops.

“One of the items most treasured by the service members,” Smith said, “Is 100 minute prepaid phone cards that enable them to call loved ones at home.” They also appreciate serving size packages of trail mix, “cheese n’crackers,” nuts, candy, gum and bottled water.

Ministry assistant Dave West listed a number of other items needed by both the USO and the transient military to include: disposable cups for hot and cold drinks, disposable food-serving gloves, plastic forks, knives, and spoons, packets of sugar, sugar-substitute, creamer, mayo, mustard, and ketchup.

Also needed are paper plates in various sizes, plastic sandwich and snack bags, and paper napkins.

All Saints members make many donations, but the needs are great and the public is also encouraged to help in supporting the troops. Donations may be delivered to the USO container in the lobby of All Saints Anglican Church at 225 South Peachtree Parkway, weekdays and Sunday mornings from 9 a.m. – noon.

Those who would rather donate money can make out checks to: “USO” and send them to “USO, P.O. Box 20963, Atlanta, Georgia 30320.” Donations of money are tax-deductible.
