The Fayetteville City Council on March 17 voted to impose $1,000 fines and warnings to five local businesses for selling alcohol to a minor.

Police Chief Steve Heaton in recommending the fines and violations said that on Nov. 26 the police department conducted an investigation of alcohol serving permit compliance at several businesses throughout the city.

During the operation, five people at five businesses were cited for selling alcohol to a minor and one of them was cited for the additional charge of not having a server’s permit, Heaton said.

Heaton said on Dec. 7 investigators traveled to the business where the violators were employed to verify whether the license holder had provided the proper alcohol training for their employees as required by city ordinance. None of the businesses where the violators worked had the appropriate training described in the ordinance, he said.

Heaton recommended fines for the businesses selling to a minor and for not providing appropriate training. Those businesses included Grady BP on Lanier Avenue and Village Market, Phillips 66 Pit Stop, Star BP and Thomas Amoco, all on North Glynn Street.

Each of the violators pled guilty in to the offenses and were fined in municipal court on Feb. 15, Heaton said. The infraction was the only one for each of the violators in the past two years, Heaton added.
