Mrs. Haruko “Sue” Newhouse, 88, of Jonesboro, passed away on January 10, 2011.

Mrs. Newhouse was born in Kauai, Hawaii. Her college career was interrupted when she was detained in an Interment Camp in 1941. After her release, she returned to Hawaii and began working for the US Government. As a teletypist, she received the news of Japan ’s surrender, ending WWII. Other than her family, her two loves were volunteering and gardening.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, SGM John Newhouse; son John Newhouse, Jr. and his wife Elke of Round Rock, TX; daughters, Barbara Nelms and her husband Bill of Fayetteville, Kathy Comilang of Honolulu, HI, and Diana Hembree and her husband Nick of Griffin; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sister Helen Yano and brother George Honjiyo, both of Hawaii.

The family will receive friends on Monday, January 17, 2011 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Carl J. Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville. A private family burial will be held on Tuesday.
