Thursday night the Peachtree City Council approved submission of a grant application to fund a significant part of the cost for the landscaping. The project would start at the intersection with Ga. Highway 74 and go westward to the city limits.

The city is proposing to add plant material, new soil and mulch in the medians and right of way to enhance the view of the roadway. The city is seeking a $168,000 grant with the city chipping in an additional $42,000. The city will also the first two years of landscape maintenance at an estimated cost of $50,000 over two years; following that period the city’s public works department will be able to assume maintenance duties, according to city staff.

The city will petition the Georgia Department of Transportation for the grant funds, which require a minimum match of 20 percent from the city. Also, the grants require a minimum two-year approval process before any construction can begin, according to city staff.

In the past the city has received similar grants of $230,000 for the third and fourth phases of landscape enhancement on Hwy. 54 East. The grants are funded with federal transportation dollars.
