Members of Bethany United Methodist Church in north Fayette County are gearing up for a yearly tradition that dates back to 1908 — the annual cooking of the Perlieu Stew. This years cooking will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30, from noon until 5 p.m. — or until the stew is sold out.

Served with pickles, potato chips, and bread, adult plates are $8 and children’s plates are $5. Pints of stew are $6 and quarts are $10.

An old tradition at Bethany, making the stew dates from the early 1900s when the main ingredient was wild game and rabbit. That has now been changed to chicken but still includes potatoes, corn, tomatoes, onions, rice and lots of butter. The stew is still simmered in iron cauldrons used since the beginning.

Bethany is on the corner of Lee’s Lake and Rivers/Milam Roads in north Fayette County.
