There have been plenty of improvements to the intersection at Ga. Highway 54 and the West Fayetteville Bypass in the past few weeks. But perhaps the most important improvement will be the installation of the traffic signal expected in October.
Fayette County Public Works Director Phil Mallon on Monday said the the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Traffic Management and Control section is expected this week to approve a temporary traffic signal.
The contractor will require up to three weeks to install the signal that will essentially be wood poles and wires, followed by a DOT-required 7-10 day period where the installed traffic signal must “blink” only.
Mallon said the county expects the signal to be fully operational sometime around the third week in October.
The permanent traffic signal will come later. Mallon said a design issue with the permanent mast arm for the traffic signal led to the potential for a re-design on the unit. If the re-design occurs, it will likely be ready for installation a couple of months after the temporary traffic light is in place, Mallon said.
