Samuel R. Phillips, 95, of Peachtree City died September 19, 2010. Sam was born in Fairburn, GA in 1915. He received his B.S. in Textile Engineering from Georgia Tech and an advanced management degree from Harvard. He was Assistant Director of theTextile Division of Uniroyal in New York City, and then President of Latex Fiber Industries in Beaver Falls, New York, until retiring to Peachtree City in 1980.
While in Beaver Falls, he participated in numerous civic and church organizations including serving as president of Lewis County Chamber of Commerce. In Peachtree City, he was active in the First Baptist Church where he and his wife Annie Laura started the Japanese Ministry, based on their experience hosting a Japanese exchange student, Yasuo Saito, whom they considered their Japanese son, in Beaver Falls.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Annie Laura and second wife Dorothy Phillips. Survivors include his son William R. Phillips of Stone Mountain, GA; daughter Rebecca P. Routh of New Smyrna Beach, FL; grandchildren Laura Routh, Dr. Rusty Phillips & Dr. Hank Routh.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 1:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Peachtree City with Dr. Steve Bingham officiating. Interment will follow at Arlington Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Carl J. Mowell & Son, Peachtree City, GA. (770) 487-3959.
