When it comes to scores on the 2010 Criterion-Referenced Competency Test administered to grades 1-8 across the state, Fayette County is hard to beat. In fact, few school systems in Georgia can top the scores in Fayette’s elementary and middle schools.

CRCT tests administered to first- and second-graders include those in Reading, English/Language Arts and Math. Beginning in third grade, students are also tested on Science and Social Studies components.

Fayette first-grade results showed 97.1 percent of students met or exceeded the standards on the Reading component, 94.1 percent passed the English/Language Arts portion and 94.2 percent passed the math component.

Second-grade students testing in the same categories showed that 95.9 percent of Fayette students met or exceeded standards on the Reading test while 92.8 percent passed the English/Language Arts portion and 94.9 percent passed the Math test.

Fayette’s third-graders tallied a 97.4 percent pass rate in Reading, 95.5 percent in English/Language Arts, 92.7 percent in Math, 93.6 percent in Science and 93.8 percent in Social Studies.

With fourth-grade students, 97.2 percent passed the Reading test and 95.9 percent passed the English/Language Arts component, while 90.7 percent passed Math, 93.8 percent passed Science and 90.9 percent passed the Social Studies test.

The pass rate for fifth-graders showed 96.6 percent on the Reading test and 97 percent on the English/Language Arts test, while 94.7 percent passed the Math test along with 90.8 percent on Science and 90.3 percent on Social Studies.

Fayette’s sixth-graders showed a pass rate of 97.8 percent in Reading, 98 percent in English/Language Arts, 89.5 percent in Math, 76.9 percent in Science and 74.3 percent in Social Studies.

Seventh-graders across test components showed a pass rate of 97 percent in Reading, 97.2 percent in English/Language Arts, 95 percent in Math, 90.8 percent in Science and 86.4 percent in Social Studies.

And among Fayette’s eighth-graders, 99 percent of students passed the Reading test and 97.9 percent passed the English/Language Arts portion, with 92.7 percent passing the Math test, 85.2 percent passing Science and 87.9 percent passing the Social Studies test.

The test performance of the individual Fayette schools is an obvious reflection of the school system’s overall scores. Compared to the percentage of students in the various grade levels meeting or exceeding the standards, Fayette students bested the state average in every test category and in every grade. Beyond that, Fayette students in a number of categories exceeded the state average by 10-20 percentage points.
