A nine year-old Gwinnett County boy admitted to Scottish Rite Hospital June 20 after a near drowning incident while visiting the Southampton subdivision in Tyrone died Monday. The boy had been listed in critical condition since his admission to the hospital.

Tyrone Police Chief Brandon Perkins confirmed that the unnamed child passed away Monday morning. The boy had been visiting at his father’s home at Southampton.

Det. Steve Lafferty said previously that the boy had been swimming with friends in the subdivision’s clubhouse pool. There were no other swimmers in the area when the lifeguard and another observer saw the boy under water in the shallow end of the pool, Lafferty said.

The two pulled the boy from the pool and began administering CPR, said Lafferty. The child was transported to Piedmont Fayette Hospital and then to Scottish Rite.

It was not known how long the child had been under the water, said Lafferty, adding that it appeared that the child had been practicing holding his breath.
