Fayette plans to take recreation department payments online

In the near future, Fayette County residents will have the option of going online to make payments to the recreation department.

County commissioners recently voted for a contract to extend the online payment service that is currently used by the county water system. The vendor is Paymentus, and as part of the arrangement, each user is charged a $2.95 service fee per transaction.

That way the county can offer the service without paying extra for it, officials said.

After the water system began accepting online payments, the water cutoff rates dropped significantly, officials said. The online payment system allows people to make after-hours payments as well, noted Water System Director Tony Parrott.

Those without a computer may also make credit card payments over the phone by calling Paymentus, said County Administrator Jack Krakeel.

Krakeel said other county departments might offer online payments in the future such as the fire department, permits and inspections and also planning and zoning. Fayette County Tax Commissioner George Wingo has also expressed an interest in offering online payments, Krakeel said.
