Thurman D. York, 75, a resident of Tyrone, formerly of Peachtree City, passed away on Monday, March 29, 2010.
Thurman was born in Skiatook, OK on July 14, 1934, the son of Clifford R. and Beatrice Harrington York. He was the fifth child of six children. The family moved to California when he was a young boy. While living there, he married Dorothy Ann Piggott.
He was a Navy-Korean veteran, where he was supervisor of the machine shop on the USS Bolster and the USS Delta. In 1967 he was transferred with Westinghouse to Peachtree City, GA where he opened the golf cart manufacturing plant.
Thurman and his family were pioneers in helping Peachtree City grow. He helped maintain the Peachtree City volunteer fire department and was a charter member of the Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, the Flat Creek Country Club and a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Thurman, his wife Dorothy, and Bill Garrard coached the first little league baseball team in Peachtree City. Thurman and Dorothy also ran the first kindergarten in Peachtree City for the First Presbyterian Church. Thurman retired from Spurlin Industries where he designed and built special equipment. He was well loved by his employees and was well known for always working hard and helping others.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy York; two children, Allen D. (Skip) York (Sharon), Karen Hayllar (Bob); three grandchildren, Carolyne Morris (Jon), SSGT Jerame York (Rachel), Christopher York; four great-grandchildren, Jerame and Ryan York, Annslee and Riley Morris; one sister, Nadine Brown and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 1, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville .
