International Baccalaureate students give back at retreat

Members of Sandy Creek High’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Program took a much-needed break from their strenuous course load for a bit of fun and fellowship at their first-ever IB Retreat.

Originally planned for last year but scuttled due to the onset of COVID-19, the IB Retreat gathers all members of the program: the junior cohort, the senior cohort, and certificate students who are in individual IB courses and not taking the full diploma program, as well as all the IB teachers and community members.

Retreat activities included live music from IB Music students, games, a hike, tie-dying shirts, a visit to Royal Animal Refuge to discuss future volunteer projects and love on adoptable dogs, and making blankets to support foster children with Bloom Our Youth.

“The goal of the retreat is for all students to meet, get to know each other, and start building camaraderie and friendships that will later lead to teamwork and support,” said Sandy Creek IB Coordinator Karina Grewe. “It is also a time where the adults model the values and expectations of the IB.”

International Baccalaureate is a two-year program designed to challenge students to excel in their studies and encourage both personal and academic achievement. Those that complete the program earn a high school diploma that is recognized internationally.
