New Covid-19 cases in Fayette County public schools as of Dec. 18 included 35 students and 25 staff members, according to the system’s public information office.

Still out of school in quarantine and isolation are 256 students and 40 staff members. Those in that status either have confirmed cases of the coronavirus or have been in close contact with a known infected person.

That makes a total of 291 students (2% of the total attending brick and mortar schools) and 65 staff members (2.2% of the total number of school employees) currently sidelined by the pandemic.

With the semester break under way until past New Year’s, no students and only a few system employees are still in the school buildings for the next couple of weeks. The system still is in the green level of Covid precautions, meaning that no schools are closed, according to the system’s graph.

Teachers are scheduled to report back to classrooms Jan. 6, while more than 14,500 students are due back in class Jan. 7.
