After stop for seatbelt violation, Fayette woman faces meth, opioid charges —

Two LaGrange men on Feb. 15 were arrested for possession of several baggies of suspected crack cocaine following a traffic stop on Ga. Highway 74 South in Peachtree City.

Darvis Whitfield, 43, was charged with manufacture/distribution of drugs, according to Peachtree City police reports.

Deontreal Dowell, 45, was charged with manufacture/distribution of drugs, revoked or suspended license, no insurance and invalid registration, police reports said.

Peachtree City Police Department spokesman Chris Hyatt said the Feb. 15 traffic stop occurred at 3:21 p.m. for no insurance and a cancelled registration, where the officer smelled marijuana.

A search of the Ford Ranger truck revealed nine baggies of suspected crack cocaine of various weights in the bed of the truck, Hyatt said.

In another case, a Fayette County woman was arrested Feb. 15 on drug charges following a traffic stop at Hwy. 74 South and Crosstown Drive.

The woman, 21, of unincorporated central Fayette, was charged with two counts of drug possession, drug-related objects and a seatbelt violation, according to Fayette County Jail records.

The traffic stop for a seatbelt violation led to a K-9 unit being called and alerting on the vehicle, police reports said.

Hyatt said several small baggies containing suspected methamphetamine were found in the vehicle, along with a scale and spoon and a hydrocodone pill for which there was no prescription. Empty baggies with residue were found in a hollowed-out WD-40 container.
