Veterans Day events and ceremonies were held across Fayette County in recent days as a way to both honor and remember the contributions of service members.
One of those ceremonies was held on Nov. 8 at Georgia Military College in Fayetteville.
The keynote speaker at the event was Ga. Department of Veterans Services Commissioner Mike Roby, who served in the U.S. Army from 1971-1994. A portion of that service was in aviation and infantry units in Germany and Korea.
Roby commented on how the tradition of service goes back to the founding of the United States.
He spoke about the shared willingness among those in military service to put their lives in harm’s way.
Roby also served at the U.S. Army Forces Command Headquarters at Ft. McPherson and at the Department of Army Headquarters in Alexandria, Va.
The GMC ceremony also recognized the large group of veterans and first responders present for the event and included the thoughts of Donald Averett (U.S. Navy, retired), a former GMC student who is now a college staff member.
Veterans Day would not be complete without the annual VFW Veterans Day parade through the streets of downtown Fayetteville on Nov. 10.
Also on Nov. 10, The Eden Project partnered with the city to honor veterans’ service with an event at the Southern Ground Amphitheater.
And on Nov. 11, veterans were recognized at the annual ceremony held at the American Legion Log Cabin in downtown Fayetteville.
Tyrone on Nov. 12 held its Veterans Day activities at Sandy Creek High School.
