Bigger Gathering Place would cost more

A proposal to expand the Gathering Place recreation center in Peachtree City would increase its operating costs but also increase revenue, according to projects city staff shared with the city council last week.

The operating expenses would increase from $148,000 a year to $246,000, assuming there are four part-time and evening staffers to help with customer service and maintenance for the additional classes and facility rentals.

The income from classes and facility rental would jump from about $34,000 a year to nearly $60,000, Leisure Services Director Randy Gaddo told council during a workshop meeting last week.

The facility currently serves an average of just under 600 people a month, but that figure does not include facility rentals, officials said.

Councilman Eric Imker said he was not sure if the expanded facility would need four additional staffers, and said he felt it was best for the facility to keep its expenses at $10,000 over the expected revenue.

Council is expected to make a decision in the future about whether to fund the expansion of the Gathering Place.
