A sinkhole at highway 54 and 74 in Peachtree City on Jan. 23 made quick work of a Georgia Power utility truck. A turn lane is closed, with another lane expected to follow. It is expected to take at least a week to repair the problem.

Georgia Department of Transportation and city engineering staff were at the intersection of Ga. highways 54 and 74 in Peachtree City on Jan. 24, assessing the damage caused by the sinkhole on the southeast side of the intersection.

The initial assessment indicated that it will take at least a week to repair the damage, according to Peachtree City Police Department spokesperson Odilia Bergh.

The bucket truck was removed, police said. Meantime, the eastbound turn lane onto Ga. Highway 54 was closed and one northbound lane is expected to be closed, Bergh said.

Peachtree City Fire Rescue spokesman Ron Mundy on Monday said a Georgia Power utility truck during the mid-afternoon hours was positioned off the roadway at the southeast corner of the intersection.

The truck was near the sidewalk and beside a sewer cover when a sinkhole opened and caused the front end of the truck to fall into it, Mundy said.

Firefighters and police officers directed traffic for a time, Mundy said.
