The Southside Theatre Guild in downtown Fairburn is thrilled to open it’s 38th season with a revival of one of Atlanta’s best-loved, original musical comedies, “Della’s Diner…Blue Plate Special.”
The show played for years at Gene and Gabe’s Upstairs and has maintained a cult status with many loyal fans throughout the years.
Southside Theatre Guild will strike the perfect balance with a cast of six STG veteran actors and direction by Broadway performer, Robert Ray, who appeared in the original Atlanta production of “Della’s.”
Newnan resident, Susan Gillespie, will play the title role of Della and Truman Griffin, also of Coweta County, will portray the young sheriff, Ronnie Frank
Ed and Patty Richardson and Diane Mitchell, all residents of Peachtree City, will also star in the “Country Western – Musical Soap Opera.”
The Richardsons first appeared at Southside Theatre in 1986 when they played the lead roles in “Oklahoma! “ Ed currently runs a successful dental practice in Peachtree City.
Diane has starred in three STG productions, most recently playing the lead in the “The Music Man” and resides in Peachtree City with her husband and two children.
“Della’s” is a heart warming story of a “woman with a past” who moves to a Tennessee mountain top, opens a diner and marries the man of her dreams…..only to find that her mountain is a nuclear waste dump and her husband is MIA after a suspicious helicopter crash at the neighboring filling station.
Sounds heavy, but accompanied by some great gospel flavored-country tunes, this show will have you toe tapping and clapping to every song and laughing till you cry.
Add to the mix a “has-been Tammy Wynette-wanna be,” two simple but charming young lovers and a “bomb shelter building redneck” played by Fairburn mailman, Kent Richards, and the stage is truly set for an evening of good-natured music and fun.
“Della’s Diner” opens tonight and plays through Oct. 17. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m., Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.
