Talks continue on future of old Senoia Police Dept.

What should become of Senoia’s old Police Department on Main Street now that the new building has opened on Howard Road? Should the buildings be sold or leased? The answer to that question will be left up to the city council once cost estimates for needed rehab and structural work have been obtained.

City administrator Richard Ferry told the council Tuesday night that an environmental sampling of the old buildings, one frame and the other concrete, had been completed for asbestos, lead paint and mold. And that is exactly what was found.

Ferry said asbestos was found in the tile flooring, lead paint was discovered in interior and exterior surfaces and some mold was found in the HVAC system. The sampling concluded that the flooring could be covered, the area containing lead paint could be re-painted and the mold could be removed. The cost of the work was not part of the sampling work.

Also needed before a decision on the future of the buildings can be reached is to address the structural work needed on both. Ferry said work such as the likely replacement of the roof system and some thresholds would need to be considered prior to any final decision on the properties.

The council instructed Ferry to obtain the cost estimates on the environmental and structural work on both buildings.

Also during the discussion, Councilman Maurice Grover noted that he still believes that the city’s Welcome Center could be relocated from its current location on Main Street, thereby saving the city $550 per month.
