Newnan celebrated Georgia Cities Week April 17-23. The theme was “Go To Town,” showing the importance of a central gathering place for people and communities. This is the 17th year Georgia Cities Week has been celebrated in the state.

“We’re very proud of our city and the services we provide that make it attractive to residents and visitors,” said Mayor Keith Brady. “Cities provide the services and infrastructure to help businesses grow, and set the stage for events where families and individuals can gather as a community.”

The city held a variety of events throughout the week, including an art contest at a middle school and high school and a juried storytelling competition with cash awards at Newnan Carnegie Library.  The storytelling competition brought storytellers to the library as part of The Carnegie Storytellers program. The competition invited each storyteller to share a story with the theme “Go To Town” with Newnan as the focus of the story.  A panel of three judges (Maggie Bowers, The Newnan Times-Herald; Anne Wallace, Fayette Chapter of Storytellers, and Elizabeth Beers, local Newnan historian) awarded first place to Frankie Hardin, second place to Michael Scott, third place to Gene McMichen and Honorable Mention to Josh Evans.
