Update – Friday, May 29, 5 p.m.: A five-car accident on Ga. Highway 74 South in Peachtree City on May 28 occurred when a large pick-up truck rear-ended another vehicle waiting at a traffic signal and caused a chain reaction collision. All injuries in the accident were minor in nature.

Martin Morales, 49, of Dothan, Ala., was charged with following too close, according to Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb, who said the accident was investigated by his office.

Babb said the accident occurred in the northbound lane of Hwy. 74 South near the intersection with Willow Road.

Vehicles were backed up at the traffic signal and beginning to move when Morales, who was in the center lane, changed lanes and struck a vehicle in the left lane from behind. That action caused the struck vehicle to strike others in front of it. A total of four other vehicles were involved in the crash, Babb said.

Two of the vehicles were occupied by off-duty members of the Peachtree City Police Department. They were transported to Piedmont Newnan Hospital and were treated and released for minor injuries, said Chief Stan Pye.

The occupants of the two remaining vehicles, both carrying single occupants, were treated at the scene and released, Babb said.

Morales was also treated at the scene for abrasion and released, said Babb.

Original story: A five-car collision on Ga. Highway 74 South in Peachtree City Thursday afternoon occurred when a large pick-up truck rear-ended another vehicle. Preliminary indications are that there are no serious injuries in the traffic collision.

Peachtree City interim Police Chief Stan Pye in a preliminary report said the accident occurred at approximately 5 p.m. and involved five vehicles.

Pye said at least two of the vehicles were in the northbound left lane of Hwy. 74 South in the area of the NCR office when a Ford F-250 came up from behind and struck one of the vehicles. Preliminary indications are that the collision led to other vehicles being struck, Pye said, adding that the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.

Pye said two of the vehicles struck were being driven by off-duty police department employees who are being evaluated at Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

It was not immediately known if others involved in the accident were injured, though initial indications were that there were no serious injuries, said Pye.
