The Whitewater Wildcats, looking to make consecutive trips to the GHSA state baseball finals in two separate classifications, have passed their first test in this year’s AAAA bracket.

Whitewater beat Chamblee 2-1 and 15-2 last Friday to win its first-round series in two straight. Next up is Pike County, whom the Wildcats face at home Wednesday in a doubleheader. If necessary, Game 3 will be Thursday.

A few miles down the road from Whitewater, one of the biggest surprises of the first round took place last Friday.

South Effingham, the fourth seed from Region 3-AAAAA, upset Starr’s Mill 2-1 and 14-13 for a two-game sweep to end the Panthers’ season.
