Because January is National Radon Action Month, the Fayette County Extension office will conduct a free radon education program on Jan. 30.

The program begins at 10 a.m. at the extension office, in the Administrative Complex, Suite 209,140 Stonewall Ave. in Fayetteville. Please call 770-305-5412 to RSVP.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas and is the second leading cause of lung cancer — the first leading cause among non-smokers. It comes from the decay of uranium in rock and soil.

While levels are low outside, the gas can build up inside homes and create a possible health risk.

Testing is easy and some relatively simple measures can be implemented to reduce the radon level if it is found to be too high.

For more information or to order a test kit, go to www.UGAradon.org or call the extension office.
