Minter Picks Out a Good Book to Share

Sara Harp Minter Elementary celebrated the kickoff of One School, One Book, a push to get families reading together.

The One School, One Book experience brings the entire Mountain Lion community together by reading the same chapter book at the same time. Their PTO purchased a copy of the book for every family and teacher to keep.

Last spring, students in Pre-K through 4th grade were presented with four book choices and voted for the book they wanted to read this fall. This year’s student-selected title is “The Water Horse” by Dick King-Smith, a story based on the legend of the Loch Ness Monster.

On Curriculum Night, families could pick up their copy of “The Water Horse,” grab some popcorn, and spend a little time reading together with friends. Inside each book is a Reading Passport that includes discussion questions for each chapter, fun activities to try at home, and a reading schedule that helps connect reading at home with reading in the classroom.

Minter media specialist Amanda Lane loves seeing families read together.

“We love the idea that all of our students can have conversations about the book with siblings and friends, even if they are in different grades or classes,” Lane said. “We hope this shared reading experience helps build a strong culture of reading by encouraging students and families to talk about books both at school and at home.”
