College students spend their spring break building houses with Habitat for Humanity

Five local students attending Georgia Tech, Georgia College and State University, and the University of West Georgia spent their spring break in Birmingham, Ala. building houses through Habitat for Humanity’s Collegiate Challenge Program. Students worked with Habitat Birmingham from Mar. 21-27.

In addition to donating their time and energy to help build houses, these students raised more than $500 for Habitat Birmingham to build the home they constructed as well as future homes in the area.

Participant, Elisha Hodgin, stated that, “The trip was one that I will never forget because we were able to help and reach out to so many people.”
Collegiate Challenge is a year-round alternative break program, coordinated through the Collegiate Challenge Team at Habitat for Humanity International in Americus, Ga.. More than 14,000 students from more than 700 colleges, universities, and high schools will work at more than 200 sites nationwide for Collegiate Challenge.

Collectively, these students have pledged more than $1 million for the affiliates they are working with. Students are helping themselves and the local community as they help others build new homes, new hope, and new lives.
