Senoia residents will soon see a new topping to Main Street in the downtown area. An April 7 approval by the City Council will result in the resurfacing of Main Street in time for the Memorial Day festivities.

The Main Street resurfacing project is not one that involves a significant length of time, said City Manager Richard Ferry.

Plans call for a tentative start date in May, with a completion date prior to the Memorial Day activities that will see the downtown area flooded with residents and visitors.

Ferry said plans call for shutting down one quadrant of the Main Street area at a time or perhaps closing one side of the street at a time. Either way, said Ferry, the project expected to require 1-2 weeks to complete will be done in time for Memorial Day.

The original bid came in at nearly $141,000, a cost that was approximately $30,000 more than the amount originally approved by the council, Ferry said.

Ferry said the city’s procurement policy states that staff can negotiate with the lowest bidder. Conversations were subsequently held with Newnan-based Piedmont Paving, Inc. Ferry said.

Ferry said that while some adjustments to the project were made, the scope of the resurfacing project remains essentially the same. With that, the council approved the bid totaling $126,805.
