Tyrone 7th grader Matthew Sherrod felt led to begin a charity to help children and families in need. Far from being content to just consider it, Matthew put his thoughts into action and formed the non-profit Pitches for Hope. The organization’s first fundraiser will be held on Nov. 9 in Peachtree City.

“Last year I felt lead by God to start a charity. It is called Pitches for Hope. I wanted to combine my love for God and my love of baseball. So I started a pitch-a-thon where the proceeds will help children and their families in need both locally and around the world,” 12-year-old Matthew said.

The pitch-a-thon for baseball and softball players and all those interested will be held on Nov. 9 beginning at 11 a.m. at the Atlanta Baseball Academy located at 110 Depot Court in Peachtree City.

“We are looking for kids and parents to be participants in the pitch-a-thon. It will be a fun day for all and there will be prizes, too,” Matthew said. ”Mr. Brian Doyle, a 1978 World Series hero who played for the New York Yankees will be there. You do not need to be a baseball or softball player. Just be able to throw a ball.”

The charities benefitting from the fundraiser include Camp Southern Ground and Compassion International, a program providing water filtration systems to families in developing countries.

Matthew is hoping to secure cash and in-kind donations. Sponsorships are available and those wishing to volunteer are needed.
