For the second straight year, the Whitewater Wildcats opened their season against the Coffee Trojans of Region 1-AAAAAA. Unfortunately, the result was similar to last year.
Whitewater took a slight lead into intermission, but the home team bounced back for a 20-7 win Friday night in south Georgia.
The Wildcats’ lone score was a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Ryan May in the second quarter. That gave the visiting team a 7-6 lead at halftime, but the Trojans rallied for 14 unanswered points in the second half.
Last year Coffee won big over Whitewater in the season opener, but the Wildcats responded with 12 straight wins and a spot in the state semifinals. After an open date next weekend, the team will look to get back on track Sept. 6 with their home opener against Mundy’s Mill.
