The District 71 runoff election is over and David Stover will represent part of east Coweta County and portions of the west side of Peachtree City in the Ga. House of Representatives. The business owner defeated Sharpsburg general contractor Thomas Crymes in the March 5 election that saw Stover win 61 percent of the vote.
Both Republicans, Stover and Crymes were the top two vote-getters in the Feb. 5 special election that saw a field of six candidates facing off to fill the seat vacated by Robert Stokely.
Stover took the runoff contest with 60.51 percent of the vote in an election where 2,241 votes were cast. The vote total showed Stover winning the Coweta portion of the district with 1,340 votes compared to 854 for Crymes. And in Peachtree City, Crymes came out on top with 31 votes compared to 16 for Stover.
District 71 includes much of east Coweta County, excluding the Senoia area, and a portion of the northwest side of Peachtree City west of Ga. Highway 74, north of Ga. Highway 54 and extending to the Tyrone town limits.
Though he won the House seat, Robert Stokely in December opted to forego the position in favor of serving in the full-time capacity as a Coweta County Magistrate Judge.
