Part of “One Book, One Peachtree City”
Peachtree City Library, in association with Southern Conservation Trust, announces a free guided hike through Flat Creek Nature Preserve, led by Mike Swanson, program coordinator at Fayette County Parks and Recreation, on Friday morning, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m.
Attendees should gather in the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater parking lot at 201 McIntosh Trail in Peachtree City.
Flat Creek Nature Area is a 513-acre wetland in Peachtree City that extends 3.5 miles along Flat Creek, from the Lake Peachtree spillway at Kelly Drive/McIntosh Trail downstream to Ga. Highway 74.
Southern Conservation Trust has installed a mulch trail, a 1,200-foot boardwalk and two viewing platforms with benches. The boardwalk can be reached by the nature trail starting beside the Amphitheater or from the Peachtree City cart path.
A walk on the boardwalk reveals trees and plants typical of a Piedmont forested wetland, including red maples, chestnut oak, American hornbeam and other native plants like turtlehead ferns and cardinal flower. Numbered markers on the boardwalk indicate tree species.
Southern Conservation Trust is a community land trust founded in 1993 by Fayette County residents eager to preserve greenspace as the community develops. The Trust protects farms and forests, environmentally sensitive land, valuable wildlife habitat and scenic greenspace in the fast growing counties south of metro Atlanta.
The guided hike is part of Peachtree City Library’s “One Book, One Peachtree City” reading initiative, featuring the book “The Seed Underground: A Growing Revolution to Save Food” by naturalist Janisse Ray (Chelsea Green, 2012).
Several copies of the book are now available for checkout at Peachtree City Library. Those wishing to purchase a copy of their own can do so at Omega Book Center in Peachtree City.
More programs are planned in conjunction with “One Book, One Peachtree City,” culminating in a book talk and signing with Janisse Ray at City Hall on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 2 p.m.
