“To sit back hoping that someday, someway, someone will make things right is to go on feeding the crocodile, hoping he will eat you last — but eat you he will.” — Ronald Reagan.

My name is Charles W. Oddo. Why have I decided to run for Fayette County Commissioner? Because I love my county! But I am worried for her.

With 42 years a citizen of our county, my roots are firmly planted in Fayette soil. My family is here. My business is here. My friends are here. My life is here. I cannot sit idly by if I can help. It is my turn to help.

Fayette is a tremendous place to live. Over the years, it has been a jewel in so many ways … most important, its people – hard-working, devoted, patriotic Americans … its education system, public and private, and always ranked as one of Georgia’s best … its businesses that take pride in the community they serve … its vistas – rolling greenery that so often hides the beautiful homes nestled within.

This didn’t just happen. Many fine people worked together, citizens and elected officials alike, to bring us to where we are. Yet the work never stops. The work cannot stop. There are no guarantees our way of life can continue, especially if the lines of communication falter between elected officials and citizens. From time to time, the lines fray, and we citizens must step back and reassess. That is what I have done.

The Board of Commissioners is entrusted to guide the county and maintain the lifestyle we have built. Yet because communications have frayed, citizens have lost confidence that their voices are being heard and considered. I’ve personally witnessed, as many of you have, moments when a simple “Thank you, Mr. Citizen, for your valuable input,” would have been appropriate, yet there has been silence.

We have all seen roads built, or not built, over the overwhelming concern of so many citizens, with nary a word of why.

We have witnessed the introduction of a county pension plan of a type that has brought near bankruptcy or worse to other localities and businesses, without knowing how Fayette’s taxpayers will fare in the future, and we ask why.

We have seen a bidding process that sometimes utilizes competitive bidding, and sometimes not, and we wonder why. After all, is it not OUR tax money being spent all the time?

Too many people have become disillusioned in their experiences with the Board of Commissioners. Why have I decided to run for Fayette County Commissioner? Because we must restore to our citizens the confidence and faith they entrust to our elected officials.

We must restore an attitude of “to serve, not to be served.”

I will help restore that confidence and faith. On July 31, in the Republican Primary, you can take a huge step with me by voting for Charles W. Oddo, Post 1, Fayette County Board of Commissioners. When elected, I will bring with me my guiding principle: The Golden Rule – treat others as I wish to be treated. It’s simple. It’s powerful. It works!

Join with me. Be the sixth commissioner! Elect me. Be my conscience. Be my support. I will listen to you. I will appreciate and consider your input. I will weigh the best solutions for our community. I will inform you. I will return openness to the Fayette County Board of Commissioners. With your help, with help from the Good Lord above, we will return the Board of Commission to the citizens!

The Fayette County Board of Commissioners and the Citizens of Fayette County are a team. Working together, we’ll succeed. But if we don’t …

“Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future.“ — John F. Kennedy

Thank you.
