Mason Scott Sells, 20, of Fayetteville, Georgia, brought light and life to his family and friends. He was born on September 29, 2003, at Henry Medical Center to Scott and Rachael Sells. His big, beautiful heart stopped when he was hit in the chest with a soccer ball while playing with friends on Monday, September 24, 2024, at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.
Mason was quick-witted and loved a good laugh. He was known for having the highest integrity, a faithful, reliable, loyal friend. He loved life, from cliff-jumping at the lake to going to concerts with friends.
As a child, Mason enjoyed all things outdoors, from animals to adventures, including catching snakes and scorpions. He was naturally fearless.
As a big brother to Abigail, he had a high level of expectation. He would encourage and give her advice, whether she wanted it or not. As they got older, they were warm to each other, including hugs goodbye. They loved each other very much and disagreed just as passionately.
To his parents, Mason was honorable and trustworthy. He could be counted on. Scott and Rachael respected Mason, and beyond loving him, they also liked him. His presence was all his parents wanted. In fact, he was his dad’s “boi” and best friend. Scott and Rachael were blessed to have seen Mason the entire weekend, just one day before he passed.
Mason graduated with honors from Trinity Christian School in Sharpsburg, Georgia, where he was on the shotgun team, and played on the soccer team. For many years, even prior to high school, Mason worked as a soccer referee. He even played with his dad on an indoor men’s league. Mason’s dad called him “wicked smart.”
A Mercer University Junior Accounting Major on the President’s List, Mason belonged to the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, and played on their soccer team. His fraternity president said of Mason, “School just kind of came naturally to him. He had time to pour into the people around him and focus on those relationships, and he was such a selfless guy. He would always put other people above himself.”
One of the most important aspects to Mason’s life was his faith. Even the weekend before he passed, he talked with his mom and dad about things he was praying about. His family takes solace in that in one moment he was doing one of his favorite things, playing soccer, and the next moment he was with Jesus.
Mason is survived by his parents, Scott and Rachael Sells; his sister, Abigail; his grandparents, Gail Slaton, Linda Sells, Jim Sells, and Lisa Sells; many aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved him dearly; his ATO fraternity brothers and his Trinity friends; and the love of his life Laura Grace Groover.
The Celebration of Life Service for Mason Scott Sells will be held at Trinity Christian School, 8817 Highway 54, Sharpsburg, GA 30277 at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 28.
