A woman recently in the business of selling narcotics saw her enterprise shut down by Fayetteville police late recently.

According to a Fayetteville Police Department spokesman, an officer doing routine business checks around midnight March 23 saw a vehicle sitting in a parking lot for an extended period of time. The officer noticed suspicious activity but no one entered or exited the vehicle.

The driver eventually took the vehicle on the road and drove through the city for a while with no apparent destination in mind before pulling into a driveway near Bradley Drive and Whitney Street at a location that the vehicle was not associated with, police said. The officer pulled in as well and made contact at that time.

After detecting the odor of marijuana, the officer began a vehicle search. The driver admitted to having methamphetamine in her purse, and the search ultimately turned up more meth as well as MDMA (Ecstasy), codeine pills, scales and plastic bags of assorted sizes.

The weight of the meth and MDMA put the charges in the trafficking category. The report indicated that the driver admitted to police at the scene that, due to various circumstances in her life at the moment, she was selling narcotics for a living.

Cayla Mayo, 32, of Fayetteville was arrested and faces three felony drug charges, according to the Fayette County Jail log. There were passengers in the vehicle, but the report did not indicate any other arrests.

Elsewhere in Fayetteville, a man came into the police station the evening of March 22 and claimed that he had been kidnapped. He said his truck was stolen and that he had been tied up and taken somewhere in College Park.

As officers began discussing the alleged incident with him, they gave him a witness statement to fill out. According to a police report, he began filling out the form and then stopped right at the point where the form indicates that anyone lying on it is committing a crime.

At that time he admitted that he had fabricated the entire story. The motive for this action was not revealed.

James Little, 51, of Gadsden, Ala., was arrested on a felony charge of false statements and writings as well as lesser charges of false report of a crime and tampering with evidence.

At the Walmart in the Fayette Pavilion retail complex, a would-be shoplifter tried to get away with a relatively small amount of merchandise but found himself in much bigger trouble than he expected. Police responded to a call from the store’s loss prevention team, which had detained a suspect who allegedly skip-scanned about $95 worth of merchandise. The ensuing investigation showed, however, that he was wanted out of Fulton County. Cornell White, 34, of Atlanta, was taken into custody and held for Fulton authorities.

Police continue their search for a shoplifter in a neighboring store who got away with quite a haul. Employees at LensCrafters reported a male suspect who came into the store, selected numerous frames, concealed them and left with more than $10,000 worth. Police are investigating this case diligently, according to a spokesman, with hopes of getting useful video footage and putting out a BOLO alert soon.
