A man who fought with Tyrone police and told them he would not go back to prison found himself behind bars anyway.

Eric Marzuki, 28, of Columbus faces two counts of aggravated assault and one count of obstruction of an officer, according to the Fayette County Jail log. All three are felonies. Other charges include reckless driving, habitual violator, open container and driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to a police spokesman, Tyrone officers were called to a domestic incident on Brentwood Road in the wee hours of Sept. 17 after getting a report that someone had been beaten up.

While they were taking the information, the officers saw a vehicle speed up the street and swerve around the squad cars, through the grass and off the road. One of the officers was nearly struck by the car, which sped up the street before turning around in the cul-de-sac and stopped.

Officers identified the driver as Marzuki and told him to get out of the car. When he did, they immediately noticed the smell of alcohol and then found two open containers in the vehicle.

Marzuki’s hands were placed behind his back, but he was not about to go quietly, according to the police spokesman. He fought with the officers until they were forced to detain him facedown in a prone position in an attempt to calm him down.

Saying that he was not going back to prison, the suspect began to fight again and was returned to the ground. By this time Fayette County Sheriff’s Office deputies were on hand to assist, according to police. He was placed in the car but was able to work his seat belt loose and started thrashing and kicking.

Eventually he was secured in ankle restraints that were attached to a hobble strap, which is designed to keep the suspect’s feet on the floor so he could not kick out a car window or do any other damage. From there he was taken to Fayette County Jail.
