An alleged kidnapping in Fayetteville Sunday that led to a shootout in Clayton County has left a woman dead and a man in jail. It was the second time within a year that the victim, 19, had been taken against her will by the suspect, police said.

Cameron Ja’Michael Hopkins, 20, of Albany was arrested for murder, kidnapping and other various felonies after leading police on a chase across the county line.

The passenger in his car, 19-year-old Khaliyah Jones, who worked at a Fayetteville restaurant, was found dead at the scene in Clayton County of multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities identified her as Hopkins’ ex-girlfriend and said he abducted her once last year as well.

According to a report from Fayetteville and Clayton County police, Fayetteville officers responded July 16 at around 11 p.m. to multiple 911 calls reporting the arrival of a man at the Wing Stop restaurant on North Glynn Street and his subsequent kidnapping of a female employee at gunpoint. Witnesses stated that the suspect drove away with the victim in a red Chevrolet Camaro.

Authorities pursued the car on McDonough Road into Clayton County. The suspect turned into a driveway at Lovejoy High School, where police used a PIT maneuver to end the pursuit. Police were able to deploy a pepper spray-type irritant by shooting a projectile similar to a paintball into the car. That led to Hopkins firing back, with several shots reportedly striking a police car, before he turned his gun on Jones and shot her.

Hopkins ultimately surrendered to law enforcement and was taken into custody. Jones was found dead inside the car.

Hopkins will be charged by Fayetteville police with kidnapping and aggravated assault. He is being held in Clayton County Jail on multiple charges from that jurisdiction, including two counts of aggravated assault along with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

Clayton County officials said he was out on bond for terroristic threats, kidnapping, criminal damage to property in the second degree, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, and aggravated assault in connection with the kidnapping of Jones last year.
