Fayette Middle School student Brinison Perkins made her mark on the Fayetteville City Council April 16 when she was recognized as this year’s winner of the “If I Were Mayor, I Would …” essay contest.
The essay contest is part of Georgia Cities Week activities. This year the sixth-grade language arts class at Fayette Middle School was invited to submit entries for the contest. And when the essays from Jessica Carroll’s class were judged, Brinison Perkins’ entry won the day.
Prior to accepting the recognition from Mayor Greg Clifton, Brinison read her award-winning essay:
“If I were mayor, I would make Fayetteville a place everyone wants to visit. Here in Fayetteville, we should dedicate ourselves to charity work for our fellow people. We should also cover the town in eye-catching and eco-friendly streets and sidewalks. Another idea is to have a much wider variety of civic events here in Fayetteville. I have a clear vision in my mind of what Fayetteville could be, and if I were mayor, Fayetteville will be these things.
“Fayetteville could save lives. We should work diligently to advertise for the charity work that can be done for Fayetteville. We could kick off every year with a pep rally to get us pumped up and excited to do charity work. It would also be amazing to have donation boxes at every store, so then customers can choose to donate money. Another good idea would be to have soup kitchens. Kids and adults need to be aware of the things going on around them so they can help.
“Fayetteville should be beautiful. Beautiful flowers should be planted so they are always visible. Also, it would be wonderful to have recycling bins and trash cans wherever we can to encourage a clean and healthy environment. The final way to make sure Fayetteville is gorgeous is to have volunteers clean up weekly to make sure our town is clean. Let’s make Fayetteville a place other towns are jealous of.
“Let’s share our talents with more civic events. It would be so much fun to have different varieties to choose from when looking for entertainment. Anything from ballet, orchestras, plays, comedy acts and musical performances would be welcome. We can have the opportunity to learn more about our fellow beings and meet new people. Everyone will mark their calendars for these civic events.
“In conclusion, Fayetteville will be known as the humble and charitable city. Also, our town will be breath-taking and clean. Finally, we will be the most talented bunch this state has ever seen. If I were mayor, Fayetteville would be crawling with people.”
