The Rising Starr Panthers clawed their way to the top of the mountain, winning the 8th grade county middle school volleyball championship.
The Panthers clinched the crown with a two-set win over J.C. Booth Middle.
“It has been several years since Rising Starr brought home a volleyball championship, so we are very proud of our 8th grade team,” said Coach Nicole Comeau. “It was a sweet victory over the other schools, as our team had been practicing to improve their serve-receive and defense during the past couple of weeks. They focused, capitalized on these skills, and played great as a team.”
Members of the championship team are Ava Glover, Chloe Tucker, Emily Benson, Gabby Huggins, Holly Harris, Kiley Groft, Lindsey Kopacek, Mary Anna Flowers, Mattie Arnold, Naomi Allen, Presley Florczak, and Sammie Brady. They are coached by Nicole Comeau and assistant coach Mark Sanders.
Coach Comeau called the team a special group of young ladies.
“After a few setbacks midseason, our team learned it takes more than talent to win championships. It takes good character, sportsmanship, integrity, and the ability to bounce back after each lost point,” she said. “Volleyball can be an emotional sport, but these girls worked hard to show positivity, an upbeat attitude, and their ‘Panther Pride’ during each set. These 8th graders had fun during the tournament, and they played their game!”
