Anaree Davis had a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to flaunt her skills as a flutist. Davis, an 8th grader at Bennett’s Mill Middle, performed at the Cobb Wind Symphony’s spring concert as part of a 108-member all-flute mass choir.

The special ensemble was assembled to honor and surprise Christina Smith, a 31-year veteran and Principal Flutist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. They performed Bach’s Arioso from Cantata #156.

Students were selected and invited by their music teachers to join along with fans and past students of Smith. Students in middle school and high school had to submit a recording of their playing to be considered for the opportunity.

Bennett’s Mill Associate Band Director Jennifer A. Theilacker nominated Davis for the honor as a promising young flute student.

“It was awesome to see Anaree sit up a little taller and have a bit more confidence.”
