The Sara Harp Minter Elementary 4th grade participated in a hands-on, role-playing activity to better understand the American Revolution.

As part of their social studies unit on the American Revolution, students stepped into the shoes of colonists and experienced some of the challenges, decisions, and perspectives that people faced during the time period.

The immersive experience included playing the different roles from colonists all the way to the King of England. It was a fun opportunity for them to get out of their seats and bring history to life rather than simply reading about it in a textbook.

Teacher Jo Elen Mills and her colleagues hoped that students would walk away with a deeper understanding of what life was like for colonists leading up to and during the American Revolution. They wanted them to think critically about the choices people had to make, understand that colonists had different perspectives and beliefs, and recognize that history involves real people making difficult decisions.

“Most importantly, we wanted students to see that learning history can be engaging, meaningful, and fun,” said Mills. “The students absolutely loved getting into character, and it was so fun to see them excited about what they were learning!”
