Fayette County 4-H Posts Strong Summer Camp Numbers, Ranks Among Georgia’s Top Counties

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. — Fayette County 4-H members took part in eight statewide camps this summer at centers including Wahsega (Dahlonega), Jekyll, Tybee, Fortson (Hampton) and Rock Eagle (Eatonton), along with one one-day camp held at the local Extension office.

The program served 339 campers and 46 adult and teen leaders, a 47.5% increase from 261 participants the previous year. Volunteers contributed roughly 1,754 hours during the summer camping season. The county also awarded $5,195 in camp scholarships to Fayette County residents.

Fayette County ranked among the top three counties statewide for camping participation out of Georgia’s 159 counties and recorded the highest numbers in the Northwest District for the second consecutive year.

“4-H Summer Camp is something I remember and cherish to this day. Youth will meet friends from their own county and all over the state. Camp teaches independence, confidence and new skills; introduces youth to things they’ve never done before; and helps develop lifelong friendships. Camp dates for next summer will be released by November. Scholarships will again be available for returning campers, for those who compete in District Project Achievement and Cloverleaf Project Achievement public speaking events, and through full and partial financial aid. High school (senior) and middle school (junior) specialty camps will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Registration details:

• Cloverleaf Camp (fourth through sixth grades): Registration begins Saturday, Jan. 30, at the Fayette County Extension Office, Suite 210. Quota: 300.
• Specialty camps: Registration begins Friday, Feb. 5, at the Extension Office, Suite 209.
  • Marine Exploration (sixth through eighth grades), approximate quota 12–14
  • Wilderness Challenge (sixth through eighth grades), approximate quota 30
  • Adventure Quest (sixth through eighth grades), approximate quota 2
  • Senior Camp, Senior Extreme Camp and Senior Natural Resource Camp (ninth through 12th grades), first-come, first-served
