FAYETTEVILLE, GA — The Fayette County Historical Society will commemorate a major milestone in local history with the Courthouse 200th Birthday Celebration on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the Fayette County Courthouse Square in downtown Fayetteville. The public is invited to attend this free, daylong event honoring two centuries of history and civic service in our community.
Activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., featuring historical exhibits, guided tours, a car show, live entertainment, and family-friendly attractions. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can explore courthouse history through a series of presentations and displays, including the opportunity to meet members of the Fayette County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office, view vintage vehicles such as the county’s first fire truck and a 1937 sheriff’s car, and tour the courthouse museum.
New this year, high school students from all five Fayette County high schools will present two mock trials of real cases once heard in the Historic Courthouse, offering guests a glimpse into the county’s legal history and courtroom traditions. Additional highlights include a reenactment of the 1982 courthouse firebombing case, led by State Judge Jason Thompson, and a guided clock tower tour.
Families can enjoy a variety of children’s activities, including viewing courthouse art created by elementary school students in the “Battle of the Schools” showcase, kids’ bingo, balloon art, and face painting.
Guests can also meet local authors, who will be selling their books and doing short readings on stage, and local artists, who will be displaying their work throughout the square.
A classic car show will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 140 Stonewall Complex, followed by an evening celebration on the courthouse lawn featuring live music by the Sean Carter Band from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Guests will also enjoy food vendors, community fellowship, and a ceremonial cake cutting by local mayors, county, and city leaders.
“The Fayette County Historical Society is proud to bring this 200th Birthday Celebration to our Fayette County neighbors and friends,” Angela Pendleton, President of the Fayette County Historical Society said. “The Fayette County Courthouse is a beloved landmark in Fayetteville and a perfect place for the community to come together for a party. We are looking forward to sharing the history of the Courthouse with everyone on November 15.”
The celebration is presented in partnership with Main Street Fayetteville, the City of Fayetteville, and Fayette County Government, with support from local sponsors, civic groups, and volunteers.
