The Habits That Shape Us

We’re past the midpoint of the year! Maybe it’s a natural time to pause, take stock, and ask: “What’s been working for me and what hasn’t?”

Psychologists say it takes about 66 days to form a new habit. That’s just over two months of doing something consistently enough that you stop thinking about it, but those habits don’t just form out of thin air. They start with something smaller: a moment. A decision point. A tiny fork in the road.

Maybe it’s the second your alarm goes off, and you either get up or hit snooze. Maybe it’s the stretch of silence before dinner when you reach for your phone, a snack, or a walk. Maybe it’s those 10 minutes in bed before sleep, when your default is to scroll until you’re too tired to stop.

These micro-moments—nearly invisible choices—are what eventually turn into patterns. Those habits start to shape how you move through your day, how you feel, and what you make space for. At JHD, that feels familiar, because we spend a lot of time helping clients map the customer journey: when does someone realize they need help? What triggers a click, a call, a decision?

It’s not so different in daily life. The better we understand the small moments that drive our choices, the easier it is to adjust them with intention.

That work starts with identifying real human behavior in motion, whether it’s a customer deciding to click or a person deciding to stretch instead of scroll. That all starts with recognizing the moment before the choice.

So if you’ve been thinking about restarting something, maybe journaling, moving more, putting your phone down earlier, even just eating lunch away from your screen, consider this your cue. You don’t need a Monday or a new month. Mid-year is just as good.

Start with the moment. Make one small shift. Repeat. And if you’re the kind of person who likes thinking about how moments are shaping up the community, you’ll love our weekly newsletter.
