Traffic is backed up in Tyrone due to a train derailment near downtown.

According to a spokesperson from CSX, Austin Staton, “At approximately 4:07 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 25, a CSX train derailed six rail cars located near Tyrone Road and Senoia Road in Tyrone, Georgia. There were no injuries reported of the crew and there is no threat to the safety of the surrounding community. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.”

Local teacher Jeremy Sweeney didn’t see the accident, but drove up to it right after, just as traffic was beginning to back up. He captured our photos. Besides teaching, Sweeney owns the local antique store, The Yellow Daisy. The accident was right behind his shop.

He said, “I was kind of stuck at that intersection coming from Newnan and I got off at that Tyrone Palmetto Road and was coming down and traffic was backed up a little bit. So I went around the Shell station. I went around the back of the Shell Station so that I could go across into the parking lot of my shop, The Yellow Daisy. There was a car blocking my exit of the Shell gas station. They were just sitting there staring at something, and I was kind of frustrated. I was like, get out of the way, man. What are you looking at? And I looked up, and I think they had seen it happen. And I saw a train. It wasn’t where a train should be, it was the darker, more red train car, and it was almost in the trees up on the bank.”

“So I pulled across real fast and jumped out. I didn’t know if people were involved in this. I don’t know if anybody would need help. And that’s when the guys were outside of the barbershop, and they had felt it when it had derailed and hit the bank. And they all ran outside. They said nobody was around, so it didn’t hurt anybody. They said the bank might’ve saved us because if that bank hadn’t been there, that one car might’ve slid out into the road,” said Sweeney

CSX’s Staton said, “Our incident response team is working to re-rail and restore the rail line as safely and quickly as possible.” Staton also indicated that the team will work into the night to get this derailment cleared.
