Peachtree City thrives not just because of its leadership and city staff, but because of the residents who actively contribute to its success. Through their dedication and involvement, volunteers help shape the city’s future and preserve the quality of life that makes our community special.
These individuals don’t step up for recognition or praise. They do it because they care deeply about our community. They understand that a strong, well-functioning city doesn’t just happen. It’s built, shaped, and sustained by those willing to serve.
Though much of their work happens behind the scenes, their impact is woven into the fabric of daily life. From guiding growth and maintaining public spaces to supporting local events and initiatives, these efforts ensure Peachtree City remains a place where people want to live, work, and connect.
Remembering Planning Commissioner Ray Liotta
One such volunteer, Ray Liotta, recently passed away on March 2, 2025, at the age of 71. Ray was more than just a member of Peachtree City’s Planning Commission. He was a man who embodied service, integrity, and dedication.
I had the privilege of working with Ray for the past 18 months. His background as a landscape architect and urban planner made him an invaluable asset to the Planning Commission. He had a sharp eye for detail and a deep understanding of functional design, allowing him to evaluate proposals for their long-term impact on the community. His knowledge and commitment helped ensure that Peachtree City’s growth remained thoughtful, compliant, and aligned with the city’s vision.
Beyond his technical expertise, Ray was a steady, pragmatic voice on the Planning Commission. He approached every discussion with a commitment to fairness and a focus on what was best for Peachtree City. Whether reviewing development proposals or refining policies, he listened carefully, asked the right questions, and worked collaboratively to find solutions that balanced responsible growth with the city’s long-term goals. His ability to navigate complex issues with clarity and professionalism made him a trusted colleague and an invaluable contributor.
Ray and his wife, Mary, moved to Peachtree City in 2022. Though his time here was brief, his contributions were significant. His impact will endure not only in the plans and projects he helped shape but also in the relationships he built and the example he set for those who worked with him.
The Legacy of Volunteers Like Ray
Ray’s passing is a reminder of the quiet but essential role that volunteers play in shaping Peachtree City. Every new resident who walks through a well-planned neighborhood, every cyclist who enjoys a smooth ride on the path system, and every family that attends a safe, well-organized event owes something to the dedicated individuals who give their time to committees and advisory boards.
Ray was one of those people. His legacy of service will live on, not just in the projects he helped shape, but in the spirit of volunteerism he exemplified. His passing is a deep loss to our community, but his contributions will continue to benefit Peachtree City for years to come.
Mayor Kim Learnard recently said it best, “Ray Liotta was a prince of a man who couldn’t wait to share his gifts with his community. We will all miss him.”
I couldn’t agree more.
