If you are an animal lover, we desperately need your help regarding the new Fayette County Animal Shelter. The new facility has been a debacle.
Hundreds of concerned citizens have complained about the following issues:
- Need bigger individual cat kennels to meet industry standards
- Must reconfigure existing dog and puppy kennels to meet industry standard (ie larger, double compartment)
- There is no working laundry room with commercial washer; dryer (fix plumbing, electrical, and ventilation)
- Fix drains (currently don’t flush due to being hooked up backwards)
- Fix drainage/grading of fenced in areas at the back of the shelter that flood and cause mud every time it rains causing the outdoor kennels to be useless most of the time
- Must have a separate true isolation area for puppies, dogs, kittens, and cats, with additional isolation walking areas for puppies and dogs, to prevent the spread of disease as dogs and cats come into the shelter
- Need software to track animal intake, information, medical records and track/inform volunteers (ie Pet Point) allowing for accurate inventory of all the animals at the shelter
- No shade trees to the back field where dogs are walked by volunteers daily
- Need a fence around the perimeter of the entire shelter property to prevent animals from escaping
- Must add proper ventilation to the shelter to prevent the spreading of diseases to protect staff and animals along with controlling the horrible odors in the shelter
- There are no proper locking and unlocking of doors inside the shelter for the safety of animals, staff, and volunteers
- Continuous water leaks in cat room
On behalf of all who are volunteering to help these animals, please help us by sending your comments to the Fayette County government.
The county government released Phase II of the Animal Shelter Masterplan Improvement project, funded with your tax dollars.
Our shelter is currently overcrowded with dogs. We are having to double up dogs in
kennels, which is causing dog fights. This situation is dangerous for the staff, volunteers, and animals. Our county administration is basically nonresponsive to the current situation at the shelter after promising our community a shelter that would carry this county for the
next 10 to 15 years into the future.
Unfortunately, Phase II consists of a 2-stall barn housing horses, goats, pigs, and chickens.
Please tell the county government to resolve the serious issues with the new Phase I shelter facility before they spend millions of dollars more on a facility for farm animals.
Many items shown on the Phase II plan drawings that are totally unnecessary, including:
- A gazebo
- A covered picnic area
- Horse stalls
- A tack room
- A water feature
- Split rail fencing
Please send your comments to our animal shelter director at [email protected] and our county manager at
[email protected]. You can complete a comment card on the Fayette County Animal Shelter website at www.fayettecountyga.gov/animal_control/
There is an Open House on the Phase II project on Tuesday, January 7th between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm in the Fayette County Administrative Building public meeting room, 140 Stonewall Ave in Fayetteville. You will also be allowed to provide written comments on the
concept and address the existing needs of the current shelter.
Please let our county administration know we want the animal shelter fixed properly and up to veterinarian shelter standards.
