Two news sources are reporting that Trader Joe’s — the specialty grocery store with a variety of private label items — is said to be considering a Peachtree City anchor location in The Avenue. And another news source, according to The Citizen’s Ellie White-Stevens, is saying, “Not so fast.” The headline for that story would be this:
Whoa, slow down! Is Trader Joe’s really coming to The Avenue in Peachtree City?
Widely spread reports about Trader Joe’s coming to The Avenue in Peachtree City are premature, according to The Citizen’s anonymous city government source.
While Trader Joe’s is considering occupying the Books-A-Million spot, contracts are not yet signed.
It’s definitely a case of counting your frozen dinners before they are microwaved. Trader Joe’s, a store serving up affordable ready-to-heat meals and grocery staples, has long been requested by Peachtree City residents.
The current closest location of Trader Joe’s is on Monroe St. in Atlanta, about 40 minutes by car, if the traffic goes in your favor.
For years Trader Joe’s said that they weren’t expanding in Georgia, until recently reports were made that they were adding six stores in Georgia, including one in Peachtree City. Whether that lands in The Avenue will be up for their negotiators.
Where will Books-A-Million go in the new year? Sources told us they’d be located in the former location of Tuesday Morning, at the opposite corner of Ga. highways 54 and 74.
Long-time tenant Books-A-Million opened the city’s first major bookstore in 2002.
If it come in, the new Trader Joe’s might occupy about 13,000 square feet in the corner slot closest to Ga. Highway 54.
It’s not the first time that site has been a grocery store. Preceding the bookstore, a specialty food store based in Atlanta tried its hand in the Peachtree City market, ultimately closing to make way for Books-A-Million.
Great idea. Stack another high traffic retailer along the worst choke point in town.
Remember the orginial retailer occupying Avenue/ Books A Million space was a grocery store “Harry’s”
It doesn’t matter what occupies space at the Avenue. The cause for high traffic isn’t the Avenue/ it’s the
massive high density housing going up surrounding 74/54 Fayette/Fairburn/Coweta/Fayetteville .
You only need to look at the massive housing (over 5000 units ) on or just off 74 South / Fayette/ Fulton line. You have Fayetteville high density housing townhomes (the new apartments) PTC has added many high density housing (apartments over the past 25 years.) On a positive note former PTC Council Member Mike King did say the positive about a PTC Sales/tax SPLOST we are collecting 1 cent from all the housing development taking place outside of PTC bringing shoppers to PTC.
Trader Joe’s will draw regional traffic above and beyond what Avenue draws now and certainly 20x above beyond BAM.
Parking and exit issues may limit the traffic growth as being too big a PITA to visit. Maybe.
A friend pointed out to me some time ago that the KMart site probably can’t go to a grocery store. Most likely, Kroger’s lease includes a prohibition against a competitor in the same shopping center. One of the bennies of being the anchor tenant. Just FYI
Terrible location for a grocery store due to traffic and parking.
Also if BAM relocates to West Park Walk I bet the store closes permanently a year or two later.
I can’t even imagine how long it would take to get in, much less OUT of The Avenue IF they follow through with opening there? How about the old Kmart? I know, too many sq ft for their business model but modify the space…There’s plenty of parking and the access wouldn’t be so constricted by the worst intersection (54/74) in the city.
This is welcome news indeed.
Trader Joe’s will be a nice addition, but Harry’s in a Hurry was a cool store while it lasted.
