Local people have the opportunity to learn a great deal about how breathing correctly can improve their quality of life by attending “Power of Breath,” a VIP event coming to ProHealth Physical Therapy and Pilates Studio in Peachtree City. The event can be attended in person or virtually via a zoom link.

“Breath is a powerful tool to help us regulate our overall body,” said Dr. Karyn Staples, PT, PhD, NCPT, who is hosting the event. “It regulates the mind, the body and the spirit – affecting our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. The quality of our breath impacts our ability to interact with the rest of the world and to be able to do what we do each day.”

Attendees will learn more about these principles as well as how the “proper” way to breathe helps tap into healing, stress reduction, improved focus and improved emotional regulation.

Every human body is designed to breathe well. A newborn baby breathes fine unless there is some kind of unusual medical issue; that is the first thing the delivery staff checks. But as life goes on, different things can get in the way – stress, posture, injury or just bad habits – and have a negative impact.

By the end of this 45-minute workshop, attendees will walk away knowing more about the correct way to breathe and will have it in their bodies’ muscle memory.

Breathing is a key part of any sport, whether you’re trying not to get winded while on a long run or calming yourself at the free throw line in a basketball game. The principles discussed in this workshop can benefit any athlete or active person. Your breathing can affect how difficult it might be to pick up your grandchild or that bulky Amazon box that was just delivered to your front porch.

Proper breathing can help you slow down your entire body and center yourself emotionally, especially when you feel anxiety coming on or are in a stressful situation. Certain deep breathing techniques can help people deal with difficulties at work or with one’s family.

“There are people who are dealing with a lot of stuff,” said Staples. “When people are hurting or stressed, they generally are not breathing very well or maybe even holding their breath. They are not getting that massage for the nervous system. If it keeps building, it just paralyzes them. They need a strategy that allows them to take a moment to reset themselves, and then go from there.”

Joseph Pilates said, “Breathing is the first act of life and the last. Our very life depends on it.”

“Power of Breath” is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 19, at 6:30 p.m. in person at ProHealth Physical Therapy and Pilates Studio, 1777 Georgian Park in Peachtree City. Virtual attendance via zoom is available as well. Admission is $30 or free with any Pilates package. Reserve your spot today.
