A team of Crocodiles was crowned Fayetteville Reading Royalty when Cleveland Elementary won the inaugural Battle of the Books with Fayetteville Elementary.

A collaboration between Cleveland Principal Jamie Inagawa and media specialist Kari Lee and FES Principal Dr. Monica Reckley and media specialist Sara Johnson, the Battle of the Books is designed to get students excited about reading and commit to completing novels with enjoyment and understanding.

The competition featured 4 teams made up of select 4th and 5th graders who read and passed tests on 6 books: “Frindle,” “The Chocolate Touch,” “The Lemonade War,” “Freckle Juice,” “The Boxcar Children,” and “The One and Only Ivan.” Teams faced three rounds of increasingly challenging questions to crown a winner.

The quartet of Kenneth Hardin, Nicholas Moye, Carter Williams, and Chadwick Gregory won 1st place for Cleveland.

Held in the Fayette County High Auditorium and hosted by FCHS Principal Yolanda Briggs-Johnson, Fayette County Public Schools Reading and Language Arts Coordinator Caroline Schmitt and district office volunteers served as judges.
